Across-cultures and generations, one thing remains true about the holiday season- it’s all about the magic of connection, as we gather around the dinner table with loved ones, sharing perspectives, memories, recipes, laughter, joy. This year, things look a little different. Reclaim that magic- Join us for a family-friendly Holiday Filmbuilding workshop! Connect virtually with participants of various backgrounds, as well as your own family members, over-seas or across town, to create a unique short film that tells your collective story around the theme, “Home.” This 3-day workshop uses the discovery-based Filmbuilding method, which allows for an organic process that opens you to honest, creative work- perfect for anyone curious about filmmaking or craving creative collaboration!

The workshop uses innovative technology such as Zoom and WeVideo’s cloud-based editing system, which allows participants to collaboratively share and edit film online! No previous filmmaking experience is required. You just need to have a smart phone, a computer with Internet and a way to transfer footage from your phone to the computer.  This is an adult workshop but family members, including youth are welcome to join as guests. You will be the representative for your family, participating the entire workshop, while your family members will join certain sessions for discussion and production.

At the close of the workshop, gather friends and family for an inspiring online screening and talk back. The result? One big cross-cultural family, sharing stories, making magic, finding our way back home again.

Meet the Instructor : Tom Flint

Much of Tom Flint’s life has been spent exploring different cultures, whether through his own eyes or the lens of a camera.  The 14 years he has spent living overseas and traveling to over 50 countries has taught him what can be learned if one is exposed to an entirely different set of perspectives, customs and values from one’s own. Tom’s time spent in Japan, in particular, has fueled his philosophical and aesthetic interests in terms of arts-based learning, and many of these principles related to mindfulness, collective problem-solving and intuitive thinking are grounded in the unique approach taken by Discovery-Based Filmmaking.

Registration is limited. All registrations will be reviewed and you will be contacted for confirmation. If you have any questions or need more information, please email Hailey Hao at hailey@matv.org.
