Journalists in Studio

Want to help tell the stories always unfolding in the Malden community? You can become a citizen journalist for UMA’s Neighborhood View! Check out our online publication at neighborhoodview.org.

The demand for quality citizen journalism has never been greater. With traditional local news outlets struggling and misinformation being spread through digital media, passionate local writers and reporters are stepping forward. Would you like to join their ranks?

The Journalism 101 course introduces principles of professional journalism and basic reporting. Students will improve their writing and reporting skills and see their work published. This is a very hands-on course with in-class exercises and feedback from both instructor and classmates. The class is structured both for the beginner and more advanced students.

As graduates of the journalism class, you are invited to join our journalism team of local citizens and college interns that produce content for Neighborhood View. We meet weekly to discuss what is happening in Malden, develop story ideas and support each other in covering stories.

Taking part in a citizen journalism program invites you to explore, get to know your own community better and become a more engaged citizen.

Wednesdays, February 15, 22, March 1 & 14, 7:00 – 8:30 PM via Zoom

To reserve a spot in this course, contact Anne at anne@umaverse.org. You must become an UMA member (if you’re not already) to enroll in this free course.

Instructor Stephanie Schorow is a veteran journalist who has worked for the Boston Herald, the Boston Globe and the Associated Press. She is a professional writing professor at Lasell University and the author of eight books on local Boston history. Assisting her is the new editor for Neighborhood View, Don Stradley, also an author and seasoned journalist.
