MORE INFO ON ART SALON

As part of a multi-faceted arts salon that UMA held earlier this year on Thursday 2/27/25 we explored the “Humans of Malden” project through music, poetry, media, storytelling and podcasting. The exhibition profiled the daily lives, memories, reflections and experiences of different people from all across Malden.

Myself, Felicia Ryan (Development Specialist at UMA) and Adam Shulman (Board Member of UMA) sat down with different guests in the digital podcasting suite at 145 Pleasant Street to ask them “Tell us about a place in Malden that has special meaning or a memorable connection for you.”

The conversation was organic, transformative and the guests truly a pleasure. The stories they shared of the different places and memories associated are captured in this podcast. I think you can really be transported to these special places(right here in Malden!) through listening. Podcasts are great vehicles for learning and imagination.

This podcast is part of our “In the UMAverse” program series that brings together Malden community members for deep discussions on topics of interest. Community members are invited to produce their own episodes for the series or train to be crew members for the TV studio productions or create a podcast series.

Special thanks to our participants: CD Collins, Jodie Zalk, Samuna KC, Ron Cox, Parto Khorshidi–Mišić, and Suzi Ecker.  You were all generous with your time and sharing your memories with us.

Thanks, and acknowledgment to my podcasting partner Adam Shulman for the energy and enthusiasm he brings to this series. You are such a great interviewer!

Super-duper thanks to Aliyah Dominguez who edited this podcast together and made it all pretty.

Appreciation and thanks always to all UMA staff members for their hard work and all their efforts bringing together this arts salon.

The Arts Salon was partially funded by a generous grant from Malden Cultural Council.

About the Exhibition

Humans of Malden is a photo-journalistic and film project that reveals the daily lives and experiences of people from all across Malden. The purpose of this project is to display the variety in our individual experiences, and how through these differences we can find comfort and affinity with others we don’t know. We went out into the Malden community finding people in their simple, everyday moments, and asked them to give us a glimpse into their lives. We collected 20 interviews, more than 50 photos, and 5 videos and compiled them in both physical and digital form to create a timeless collection of these moments.

This reprise of this exhibit was supported in part by the Malden Cultural Council, a local agency of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

The original project would not have been possible without the help of Masio, Anne D’Urso-Rose, Keren He, and the support of the UMA staff.
