An adult workshop using the discovery-based Filmbuilding approach! Nine people participated in this first adult Filmbuilding workshop, which was held virtually October 23-25, 2020, over zoom. Participants broke into two groups, and created films along the theme “What is the antidote to Despair?”
Virtual Filmbuilding Workshop and Screening!
At a time when creative collaboration of any kind can feel impossible, this unique Filmbuilding workshop brought members of the community together to make two short films in ONE weekend!
About the workshop
A 3-day Filmbuilding workshop hosted by MATV/UMA in collaboration with Tom Flint. Faced with various constraints; time (only one weekend), no in person meetings (all virtual), no prior filmmaking experience, and the use of an online editing platform (wevideo), participants learned to trust the process and each other, and used what resources they had at their disposal to create two unique films.
Approach
The Filmbulding workshop embraces a process involving discovery-based filmbuilding, project based learning, and intercultural exchange.
The lightbulbs at the top represent various ideas, coming from the participants. The lines show the exchange of ideas- It’s more of a blending of ideas, not a systematic process, he explains. Finally, the film strip is the final result, which is your film, and the stars at the bottom represent the viewer experience.
Meet the Team!
Tom Flint- Tom is the creator of Filmbuilding and head teacher/facilitor of the workshop. “Film is a great tool for engaging people in collaborative experiences and getting to know people who are different from us.”
Hailey Hao- Hailey is the Program Director for Filmbuilding as well as the Director of Media Arts Education at MATV/UMA.. She works with instructors to create programs like this and wants to expand and develop the Filmbuilding program!
Masio Dotson- Masio is the Staff Coordinator- he works with the mentors of each group to help facilitate the Filmbuilding process. He is also the volunteer and intern coordinator and a great resource and source of positivity at MATV/UMA.
Ose Schwab- Ose is the Outreach Coordinator for Filmbuilding as well as the Director of Membership and Marketing for UMA!
Amanda Hurley- Amanda is the teaching assistant for this workshop, assisting Tom and mentors as needed. She is also social media manager and production manager, documenting the process. She interns for MATV/UMA as well and enjoys the collaborative process.
Kamila Rodriques- Kamila is the filmbuilding mentor for Group A. Additionally she is a freelance producer who loves working with media and an intern at MATV/UMA. She previously mentored for the youth Filmbuilding Workshop and really enjoyed it!
Anthony Tufo- Anthony is the filmbuilding mentor for Group B and also an intern at MATV/UMA. He had a similar experience in working with the 48 hour film festival and enjoys the connections he makes through filmmaking. He also loves indie films and documentaries!
The Process- One participant, Parto Khorshidi, when asked about challenges and disagreement, describes the process from her experience. “It’s all part of the creative processings. The theory is different than the applied science. If the group has the right chemistry, the feedback feels supportive.”

The Screening!- On Thurday, October 29th from 7-8pm, there was a screening and talkback for both films! The theme for the films was “What is the Antidote to despair?” and the two groups went in different and unique directions with it. Group A’s film has some powerful and dynamic content and is entitled, “The Urge of Now,” while Group B’s film is a touching slice of life entitled. “A Life Well Lived.”
