UMA has a variety of opportunities that allow you to apply your skills, learn, and be part of a vibrant group of diverse people who care about community and love media and arts in its various forms. Some of these opportunities are time sensitive or project based. Internships are typically for those looking to build skills and experience for career or further hands-on education. Web Content Creator - Needed ASAP

INTERNSHIP/VOLUNTEER

Position Summary

Urban Media Arts (UMA) is seeking an experienced podcast editor to join a podcasting team to work on a grant-funded podcast series called Culture Matters in Malden, produced by Urban Media Arts (UMA) focused on conversations with Malden-connected individuals or groups discussing culture and arts related topics. This editor will work closely with a team of producers/hosts to help with post production editing and script creation and some pre-production research. This part-time temporary contractual position or paid internship would end February 2022 but could possibly be renewed based upon funding.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Create 20 new pages according to specification with appropriate copy and images in a clear and aesthetically pleasing way that also conforms with brand identity.
  • Create preliminary sketch of pages for review
  • Create multiple web pages upon specification
  • Layout copy with images
  • Modify menu

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience creating pages on WordPress, using Elementor
  • Excellent written skills
  • Sense of layout design for web pages

Technical Skills

  • Experience working with WordPress platform 
  • Experience using Elementor 
  • Buddy boss theme experience is a plus

Time commitment and pay:

  • This is a project-oriented volunteer position and will end when the pages are completed. Possibility for further work is feasible.

Podcast Editor - Needed ASAP

PAID INTERNSHIP OR CONTRACT

Position Summary

  • Edit each podcast and advise on sound and editing improvements
  • Editorial suggestions welcome but not required for this role
  • Transcribe conversation for each podcast, using tools and editing text as needed
  • Listen to and provide notes on audio drafts of episodes
  • Fact-checking and sourcing for each episode

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience editing podcasts or podcast-like radio
  • Interest in Culture, arts
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to interact and work with staff, interns and the Culture Matters in Malden team
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Organized about time use

Technical Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of audio editing software (we use Audition but others are fine).
  • Familiar with podcast hosting platforms

Time commitment and pay:

  • Duration of contract September 2021 – February 22, 2022.
  • Hours per week (approx) – 5-10 per week
  • Pay – commensurate with experience – up to $150 per completed podcast episode

Instructional and Education Video Creators

INTERNSHIP/VOLUNTEER 

Position Summary

Urban Media Arts (UMA) seeks one or more interns/volunteers to create a number of educational videos and tutorials that UMA will use as resources and education tools for its members. These videos will be short (5 minutes or less) and will offer background and historical information through narrative shots as well as “how to” tutorials (using the Podcast Suite for example) that can incorporate some animation.

Online Learning Content Creator

This opportunity is ideal for someone with online learning content creation experience and/or an interest in applying writing and media skills for online learning applications.

Community News Reporter / Journalist 

INTERNSHIP/VOLUNTEER 

Position Summary 

Report on stories in the local community for publication on our online news source Neighborhood View. We are a vibrant citizen journalism site that also features stories from student journalists and writing/multi-media interns at UMA (Urban Media Arts). Stories cover local government, arts, education, culture, profiles, events and local history. Ongoing training and support is provided by professional journalist/writer Stephanie Schorow, editor of Neighborhood View. Weekly editorial meetings are offered to all reporters – to discuss story ideas, share story progress, and provide ongoing feedback and support to journalists. 

For this position, we are looking for interns/volunteers with all or most of the following skills/interests: 

  • Curiosity and interest in stories and community 
  • Writing skills 
  • Interviewing and journalism reporting skills 
  • Multi-media experience (video, photography) a plus

Gallery Exhibition Coordinator 

INTERNSHIP/VOLUNTEER 

Position Summary 

Urban Media Arts (UMA) seeks one or two (collaborating) interns/volunteers to help plan and coordinate an art exhibition at Gallery UMA, the art gallery space located inside our facility at 145 Pleasant St. In Malden. The exhibit will feature two or more artists from the local area. The coordinator will help to come up with a theme for the exhibit, interact with the artists to collaborate on the details, write copy for promotion, work with our marketing team to promote the exhibit, and oversee the details of installing the exhibit and hosting a reception. Training and support for all aspects of this project will be provided by one or more UMA staff members. 

For this project, we are looking for interns with all or most of the following skills/interests 

  • Interest in art and sharing art with community 
  • Ability to work and connect with people of different backgrounds 
  • Good organizational / project management skills 
  • Writing skills 
  • Marketing / promotion experience a plus

Government Meeting Media Coverage 

INTERNSHIP/VOLUNTEER 

Position Summary 

We’re a Greater Boston area Community Media Center seeking applicants for the volunteer/Intern position of Government Meeting Media Coverage Producer. Reliable trainees may qualify for paid stipend opportunities after a trial period. 

The Meeting Coverage Producer will be responsible for supporting, recording and monitoring our televised gavel to gavel coverage of local government board and committee meetings in the City of Malden. These meetings take place at the new City Hall and/or other municipal buildings. This position will rotate with the Government Programming Coordinator on an assigned board or committee basis where producers are assigned to a specific meeting, primarily weeknights Monday through Thursday with the occasional day or weeknight when needed. Generally, the availability is from 5:30 PM until 9:30 PM.  Sometimes meetings start earlier or end later.   

Qualifications 

Producers will be representing UMA as an organization and must exhibit the following:  

  • Professionalism 
  • ability to troubleshoot over the phone 
  • solid communication skills 
  • an understanding of live television 
  • Applicants must be the age of 18+ and have their own transportation 
  • Audio/Video or visual experience preferred but will train the right candidate with specific training
