Interest forms are due by June 30, 2022.

Urban Media Arts (UMA) is seeking a diverse range of Malden residents interested in taking part in the new city-wide initiative, Filmbuilding Malden: Our City in Motion. Acting as key participants in the project, residents (known as Filmbuilders) will work in small groups to co-create a series of short film projects that explore Malden’s identity and envision its future. Working alongside professional film artists, Filmbuilders will develop, shoot and edit their projects to be screened at special community events around Malden.

Filmbuilders will work online in mixed, multi-age groups as they develop and edit their projects, and will film their projects around various areas of Malden. Filmbuilders must be able to commit to a workshop session during either the Fall 2022 (Aug-Nov) or Spring/Summer 2023 (May-July). These workshops will involved some time (approx 35-40 hours over a three month period, mostly evenings and weekends). No filmmaking experience is required.

This position will offer participants myriad opportunities to build connections within their community and develop a range of skillsets related to team-building, creative problem-solving, visual storytelling, civic engagement and more. Involvement in the project will include complementary online training in community-oriented dialogue by the Cambridge-based Essential Partners organization. This large-scale project is a city-funded arts and culture initiative aimed at enhancing cultural cohesion, developing community assets, and strengthening Malden’s sense of place.
