The Malden Climate Action Plan is finalized

On September 17, 2024, Rebekah McPheeters from the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development in Malden presented the finalized Malden Climate Action Plan to the Committee of the Whole. (recording below)

The Climate Action Plan (CAP) process began in 2022 when Mayor Gary Christenson announced that Malden would develop its first Climate Action Plan with technical assistance from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC). In 2023, several key milestones were achieved, including a Greenhouse Gas Audit, a base conditions assessment, the formation of a resident Steering Committee, community engagement, data analysis, and the design of a draft plan. These efforts culminated in the final plan and associated media.

One of the plan’s goals is to enhance community resilience. Engagement with the plan is a crucial part of that process. To facilitate this, Urban Media Arts (UMA) partnered with MAPC and the City to promote the plan in accessible ways for the community. Specifically, UMA:

  • Hired Bilal Saed, a filmmaker and video producer/editor, to summarize the CAP in a 3-minute video.
  • Worked with college and high school interns to create media and commentary about the plan and its goals.
  • Provided a summary page with information about the CAP, links to resources, and ongoing updates and engagement opportunities.

UMA believes this work is vital. As a community media organization focused on enhancing civic engagement in Malden, UMA is committed to continuing to work with the City to help involve the community in the climate action efforts.
