UMA Drop In with Voices from the Malden River
October 6 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm EDT
Join Urban Media Arts (UMA) for our bi monthly drop in. Get inspired by what some members are creating: podcasting, video, citizen journalism, photography, art, or music. Share your ideas with others. Walk away with a next step to engage, create, or volunteer with UMA.
This and subsequent UMA Drop ins will take place by Zoom until further notice (with regard to Covid and variants) and be hosted by various members of our staff and membership. We welcome anyone interested in learning about UMA and getting connected with community.
Join nature enthusiast and protector Karen Buck and several Malden Youth (from Malden Catholic and Malden High) as they share about the stories and pictures they gathered from the Malden River a few days this summer. This Voice of the Malden River PhotoVoice project, a collaboration between UMA, Malden Catholic, Malden River (FoMR), and the Malden River Works (MRW) using and an international free online photography platform known as Photo Voices resulted in a collection of photos of wildlife and extraneous debris taken from canoes on Malden River with some narrative and an enhanced connection to this natural treasure known as the Malden River.
Read Karen Buck’s article about the projects, with pictures and reflections, with an excerpt here.
Voice of the Malden River PhotoVoice project was sponsored by Urban Media Arts and MIT’s Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism (via the City Prize awarded to Malden River Works). PhotoVoice is an opportunity to engage the community in dialogue about assets, opportunities and challenges of the Malden River through photographs and narratives. UMA created an intern program with Malden Catholic and Malden High School. The interns studied the art of film making and the science of the Malden River to capture the beauty and challenges of the Malden River through photographs. These captioned photographs will be presented to the City of Malden via social media and gallery exhibits.
