About the Project: The youth of Malden collaborated with Urban Media Arts and Friends of the Malden River over the spring and summer of 2021 to participate in documenting and cleaning up the land near the Malden River. These students have worked as stewards to clean up and educate the public about the environmental impact of waste in nature, giving a voice to this overlooked ecosystem.

The Voice of the Malden River PhotoVoice project was sponsored by Urban Media Arts and MIT’s Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism (via the City Prize awarded to Malden River Works). Malden youth, with Friends of the Malden River president Karen Buck as their river guide, created a photo-narrative project and series of short films to educate the public on river conservation, restoration and preservation.

In addition to the films created by Malden youth, in collaboration with UMA and Malden River Works, the screening will also include more river and nature-based film content provided by a few other groups (TBD)!

UMA held a virtual reception and screening back in November (which you can still view and read about at your leisure through the provided link), and now that it is safer to do so, we hope you will join us for this very special in-person, gallery tour held right here at UMA, followed by a reception and screening taking place at the wonderful Senior Center and Teen Enrichment Center next door!

Please join us on the 26th support youth media education in Malden!  Invite your friends and collaborators and come with your own ideas about using media to connect to the natural world!

If you have any questions or would like to view the gallery on a different day, reach out to Education Coordinator Amanda Hurley at amandah@umaverse.org
