Urban Media Arts (UMA) has openings for individuals interested in being an Intern Community Journalist, reporting on local stories for our online publication Neighborhood View.

Neighborhood View is a vibrant citizen journalism site that also stories from student, community, and professional journalists. Stories cover local government, arts, education, culture, profiles, climate issues, events and local history. Ongoing training and support are provided by professional journalist/writer Don Stradley, editor of Neighborhood View. The internship is overseen by Anne D’Urso-Rose, UMA Associate Director and Neighborhood View coordinator. Weekly editorial meetings are offered to all reporters – to discuss story ideas, share story progress, and provide ongoing feedback and support to journalists.  

Responsibilities and Duties

General

Attend weekly editorial meetings held on Wednesdays from 5:30 – 6:30 pm via Zoom
Pitch local stories or work on assigned stories
Research story background and conduct interviews
Write story draft and edit following editor’s suggestions
Find images, take photos, or make arrangements with a photographer
Meet with coordinator or editor as needed
Learn about other activities at Urban Media Arts and plug into activities related to interests and skills

Qualifications

Curiosity in stories and community
Takes initiative in learning about our local community
Strong writing skills
Interviewing and journalism reporting skills
Multimedia production skills a plus
Good communication skills
Professional presentation as a reporter for Neighborhood View

Additional Information

This position is hybrid.
The internship position is unpaid. However, after the internship is successfully completed, stipends are available for assigned or pitched stories.

Internship Term

6/3/2024 to 8/23/2024 – though duration can be flexible.
